General Conditions
- A purchase order, company fax or letter is required before research is undertaken or material supplied.
- A cancellation fee of A$44 (plus any ongoing costs incurred at the time of cancellation) will be levied when clients cancel previously authorised services.
- Prepayment is required for all copying services.
- The National Film and Sound Archive must be acknowledged in the credits of: productions, screenings, festivals and associated publicity when using material supplied by the National Film and Sound Archive. Our preferred acknowledgment is 'Footage supplied by National Film and Sound Archive'. Publication of images must be accompanied with the words 'From the Documentation Collection, National Film and Sound Archive'.
Publicity associated with the screening of films should contain the acknowledgement 'Print Courtesy of the National Film and Sound Archive.’ Prints from the Kodak/Atlab or Atlab/Kodak Projects should be acknowledged as 'Print Courtesy of the National Film and Sound Archive's Kodak/Atlab Project' or 'Print Courtesy of the National Film and Sound Archive's Atlab/Kodak Project' (whichever is appropriate).
Wherever possible, the NFSA requires this form of words be accompanied by our graphic signature which is available electronically from NFSA staff.
- Material is available on a non-exclusive basis, for use in one specified production or screening only. Rates for books apply for one edition only, for each subsequent edition a charge of 50% of the original payment is required.
- Master material supplied by the NFSA in respect of out-of-copyright or orphan works must be erased on completion of the client’s project.
- Clients are liable for any damage to or loss of collection items while in their care. Charges involve repair or replacement fee and A$54 service fee.
- All remittances must be in Australian Dollars (AUD$).
- All fees in this Schedule are Goods and Sales Tax (GST) inclusive. Goods exported out of Australia are GST-free. To qualify as a GST-free supply, the export must be made before or within 60 days of receiving payment.
Copyright & Confidentiality
Most of the NFSA's collection remains under legal control of the copyright owner and/or depositor. Written permission from the copyright owner and/or depositor is needed prior to this material being supplied. Please note that:
- Copyright clearance is your responsibility, though the NFSA may provide initial advice on contacting the copyright owner.
- The copyright contacts listed in the online collection database are the last known record for specific titles.
- If the copyright owner cannot be found, we may agree to supply the material and ask you to sign an indemnity form.
- Usage fees may be levied. (see Schedule of Charges).
Other restrictions may need to be observed for the use of Indigenous and other sensitive materials. You may also need to allow additional time for liaison with traditional owners.
Keeping it confidential
In all access transactions we will deal confidentially with individuals and seek to provide an efficient, reliable and client-oriented service.
Do you need to acknowledge the National Film and Sound Archive?
Access to any of the National Film and Sound Archive's collection for external use or reproduction is conditional on a prominent acknowledgement or credit being given to the NFSA. The type and nature of the credit is agreed between you and the National Film and Sound Archive.
Return to depositor
Where owners have placed collection material 'on deposit' with the National Film and Sound Archive, access officers can arrange for the retrieval and despatch of such material to the depositor (subject to retrieval, service and freight charges).
If a depositor requests the collection material be returned to them or made available to a third party, the depositor accepts all risks associated with the material after it leaves the premises of the National Film and Sound Archive.
