Muriel's Wedding (1994), one of Australia's best-loved films, was a bittersweet comedy about an unhappy young woman, desperate to escape into marital bliss. When marriage does not solve her problems, Muriel (Toni Collette) finds happiness with the help of her friend Rhonda (Rachel Griffiths).
The film boosted many careers, including Toni Collette and writer-director P.J. (Paul) Hogan.
Toni won an AFI Award for Muriel's Wedding, her second film, and has since won AFI Awards for her supporting roles in Lilian's Story (1995) and The Boys (1998).
P.J. also launched a successful career in Hollywood, with My Best Friend's Wedding. He is married to AFI Award-winning film-maker Jocelyn Moorhouse (Proof), who co-produced Muriel's Wedding.
