National Registry of Audiovisual Collections

What is the National Registry of Audiovisual Collections?

  • The Registry is a comprehensive listing of collections of moving image and recorded sound materials throughout Australia - local, regional, state, national and international in origin.
  • Listings include collections held by: national institutions, libraries, museums, government agencies, community groups, corporations, industry and commercial bodies, educational institutions, research groups, media, distributors, production companies, political organisations, sporting groups, embassies, foreign legations and individual collectors.
  • Material of historical and cultural heritage value is registered alongside holdings of popular culture in many different formats.
  • Registrants can enter a few items or many as a defined collection. Even a single audiovisual item can be listed.
  • The material registered might be in a formal collection with dedicated storage, or it may be held in a house by an honorary secretary of a community group.

How is the NFSA finding and identifying registrants?

  • In preparing the first edition, the NFSA approached the holders of known collections and previously published listings, undertook web-based searches, and sought contacts to help us locate and identify sources.
  • We also talked to a wide range of umbrella organisations, from libraries to media art centres.
  • The NFSA invites further registrations to support the future evolution of the Registry online. Just download and fill out the Registration Form below.

How will the Registry be published?

  • The first edition has been published as a printed catalogue.
  • In future it will be developed online as part of the NFSA website.
  • The Registry will be an active, living entity with periodic/regular updates.
