Australia's Prime Ministers

Robert (Bob) Hawke entered Federal Parliament in 1980 after rising through the ranks of the ACTU where he had a high public profile and reputation as an effective conciliator. He served as the Opposition spokesman on Industrial Relations, Employment and Youth Affairs. After an ALP leadership spill – just as the Fraser Government called a Federal election – Hawke was appointed Parliamentary Leader of the ALP. Hawke went on to win the 1983 election and elections in 1984, 1987 and 1990 making him Australia’s longest serving Labor Prime Minister.
