Australia's Prime Ministers

Paul Keating first entered Federal parliament in 1969. He held the portfolio of Treasurer in the Hawke government from 1983 to 1991. He became Prime Minister in 1991 after successfully defeating Bob Hawke in a leadership challenge. Keating led the ALP to victory in the general election of 1993. He remained in office until the next election in 1996, when the Liberal Party under John Howard won convincingly.
