Australia's Prime Ministers

Gough Whitlam first entered Federal Parliament in 1952, becoming Leader of the ALP in 1967.
Whitlam led the party to win the 1972 Federal Election, ending 23 years of Liberal-Country Party
coalition Government. The ALP went on to win the 1974 double dissolution election with a
comfortable majority in the House of Representatives, but did not control the Senate. A
constitutional crisis occurred when a hostile Senate refused to allow the government’s
budgetary legislation to pass. Parliament remained deadlocked, finally resulting in the Governor
General withdrawing Whitlam’s commission and replacing him with the Leader of the
Opposition Malcolm Fraser pending a General election. Whitlam was defeated in the December
1975 election.
