In 1917, battles at Bullecourt, Messines, and Ypres result in a further 76,836 Australians being killed or wounded. Australian troops become increasingly disillusioned with British command. After a battle at Ypres, one Australian officer made the comment 'British staff, British methods, and British bungling'6. |
| The allied cause is strengthened in April 1917 when the USA declares war on Germany. Hoever, in November the Bolshevik revolution in Russia leads to an Armistice between Germany and Russia. This releases over one million German troops for deployment to the Western Front. |

1917 also sees Australia vote for the second time on the question of conscription. As with the first referendum in 1916, conscription is narrowly defeated. However, the outrage Australians feel towards Germany is still apparent in films released this year including The Murder of Captain Fryatt and Australia's Peril. |
